I’ve had a dugout 3″ for 46 years. The 4″ I received is great for my needs today. I also enjoy the brass pipes over other styles.

it’s a true slide top, almost just like a original dugout just missing, on the bottom, the name “DUGOUT PAT. 4214658”. LOL All jokes aside I’m truly impressed and have been passing the word among my group of friends

I recently purchased two 3” Wood dugouts with the slide top. They arrived in a few days with the free shipping option and were each wrapped nicely with just enough packing material. I ordered two different wood species and was pleased equally by both.
Being brand new I found the wood edge/corners of the dugouts were still “sharp” to the touch when sliding the lid either way. This is to be expected and is totally normal and fine as these will over time smooth out with regular use. But being a carpenter and a tinkerer and instead of waiting for these to smooth out from friction over time…. I took a small bit of “fine” sandpaper to the 4 corners of the wood “chamber” and gave them each a few soft buffs with the fine sandpaper. This immediately softened those edges up and they felt way better to my finger tips as I slid the lid one way or the other. I also removed the small lid and lightly buffed the underside “edges” of the lid itself to allow a bit less friction when sliding the lid. So tip 1: sand the edges.
Tip 2….Relating to the “pivot top” vs the “slide top” and which one you want I have the following advice.
While the pivot top makes a lot of sense when thinking about not loosing the lid or it may seem more high tech and logical….it actually imo creates a problem that only becomes apparent with actual use.
Because the pivot top needs something for the pivot screw to screw into the chamber that holds the organic matter has to be made “smaller” / less wide so that there is some decent wood for that pivot screw to go into. This is an obvious negative bc now there is LESS room for the good stuffs. But a less obvious problem is that it’s also harder to get the good stuff out and bc of the narrow chamber you have only the option to “push” the pipe into it in order to “load” it which ultimately results in you compressing the good stuff into a small brick at the bottom making it IMPOSSIBLE to reload at some point unless you have a long sharp and thin object “on you” at the time of need in order to break up the brick which I have found to be a real challenge when out and about. This is why I can ONLY recommend the sliding lid over the pivot mainly and most importantly bc the chamber that holds the organic matter on the slide chamber is significantly wider than the pivot chamber which makes it easier to “scoop” at the organic material as you “load the bat” as opposed to again really only being able to “push and turn” the bat into the pivot chamber.
The scooping action that can be executed in the slide chamber virtually eliminates this problem.
Anyhow as you may have guessed by the long review I have already been enjoying my new dugout and time to keep doing so. Hopefully these tips from someone who has been using and owns dugouts of both types for over 30 years help and if so consider yourself schooled:-) Peace!
