Here’s how to keep yours in top shape:

🔩 Common Issue #1: The Pipe Falls Through

If your one hitter isn’t popping up properly — or worse, it’s fallen deep into the slot — the spring might be the culprit.

Fix it in 5 easy steps:

  1. Straighten out a paperclip.
  2. Use needle-nose pliers to create a small hook on one end.
  3. Insert the hook into the pipe slot and gently snag the spring.
  4. Remove and inspect the spring.
  5. Using pliers, bend the bottom coil inward to block the end — this prevents the pipe from sliding through.

⬆️ Common Issue #2: Pipe Doesn’t Pop Up Enough

If your one hitter just barely rises when the lid is opened, you can give the spring a little boost:

  1. Remove the spring (as above).
  2. Gently stretch it out by just a fraction.
  3. Reinsert it and press down with the flat end of the pipe to secure it in place.
  4. Test the action — your pipe should now pop up higher for easy access.

🧷 Lid Adjustment & Maintenance

Dugouts with swivel lids can loosen or tighten over time — especially with changes in humidity. Most of ours use a hex screw, and we include a hex key with every order for adjustments.

If your lid gets too tight or too loose:

  • Use the hex key (or the appropriate bit: Phillips, diamond, or square) to adjust the screw.
  • Always check your lid before travel to avoid accidental spills.

For slider lid dugouts (typically crafted from durable teak wood), the fit can sometimes be tight — especially with sharp edges.

To safely loosen a stuck lid:

  1. Place a capped pen on a flat surface.
  2. Press the lid edge into the pen cap to gently nudge it open without hurting your fingers.
  3. Once removed, use fine-grit sandpaper to lightly smooth the edges. Try 4–5 swipes at a time, testing the fit before continuing.

  • Soak your pipe overnight in isopropyl alcohol, a mild detergent, and hot water.
  • Use a poker to push through any resin buildup.
  • For stubborn clogs, gently heat your poker before use — the heat helps loosen stuck resin.
  • Consider buying multiple pipes so you can rotate and soak one while using another.
